Saudi Arabia and South Korea Launch High-Tech Agriculture Hub in Riyadh
ShareShareShareShareShare

In a bold leap toward sustainable food production and technological innovation, Saudi Arabia and South Korea have joined forces to launch a pioneering smart agriculture complex in the heart of Riyadh. This collaborative initiative marks a defining milestone in the evolution of farming across the Middle East, particularly in the face of climate challenges and increasing food security demands.

The foundation stone was laid on April 21, 2025, by Saudi Arabia’s Deputy Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture, Mansour Al Mushaiti, and South Korea’s Vice Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, Park Beom-su. The event signifies the beginning of a high-tech venture designed to reshape how agriculture is practiced in arid environments.

Located within the National Agricultural and Animal Resources Research Center, the 4,000-square-meter facility is set to house some of the most advanced smart farming systems currently available. A vertical farm will cultivate leafy greens, strawberries, and mushrooms using container-based technologies—ideal for controlled environment agriculture in water-scarce regions. The complex will also feature a next-generation greenhouse equipped with Korean technologies that optimize fertilizer use, water efficiency, and crop yields.

“This project represents a new chapter in the evolution of modern agriculture,” said Deputy Minister Al Mushaiti. “It is designed to foster innovation in farming and contribute meaningfully to sustainable development and food security in the Middle East.”

At the heart of the initiative is the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT). These technologies will regulate irrigation levels, analyze crop data, and even recommend optimal planting strategies. Additionally, AI-enabled mobile farming systems are projected to more than double crop output compared to conventional greenhouse models. The facility also introduces agricultural robots that handle critical tasks ranging from data collection to automated harvesting.

Vice Minister Park Beom-su highlighted the broader significance of the project: “This complex symbolizes a fusion of Korea’s technological strength with Saudi Arabia’s agricultural ambitions. Together, we are laying the foundation for a smarter, more resilient farming future.”

The Riyadh smart farming hub stands as a flagship model for regional and international observers alike, demonstrating the power of cross-border collaboration and tech-forward agricultural innovation. As nations worldwide look to secure food supplies and adapt to climate constraints, the Saudi-Korean partnership could well become a blueprint for the future of farming in arid zones.
