For commercial greenhouse operators, a single hygiene mistake can ruin an entire harvest. In the Czech Republic, grower Andrea Záturecká and her team at Farma Kožichovice face a constant threat familiar to tomato and pepper growers worldwide: Tomato Brown Rugose Fruit Virus (ToBRFV).
‘An increasing number of ToBRFV infections have been reported during the last season. Moreover, the virus can survive on surfaces for over six months, leaving zero room for error. “Once a plant is infected, there is no treatment,” explains Záturecká. “Prevention isn’t just helpful; it is essential to our business.”
The Science: Independent Laboratory Results
To clear facilities between growing cycles, Farma Kožichovice updated their end-of-season cleaning routine using Multi-Des GA, a specialised disinfectant combining glutaraldehyde with quaternary ammonium compounds.
The active formula penetrates small cracks and pores in greenhouse surfaces, such as gutters and concrete, fully eliminating any micro-organisms present. Also tools, clothing, and machinery are important to disinfect, as they can easily transfer diseases within greenhouses.
Practical Results on the Farm
Farma Kožichovice also switched from standard liquid spraying to a foam application. The foam sticks to vertical surfaces longer, ensuring the disinfectant stays active without delaying seasonal cleanup.
According to Záturecká, the updated strategy delivered clear operational benefits:
- Prevented Virus Outbreaks: No ToBRFV infections occurred after adopting the new protocol.
- Controlled Fungal Diseases: Broad-spectrum protection significantly reduced Botrytis (gray mold) pressure.
- Lowered Pesticide Use: Fewer disease problems reduced the need for pesticide sprays during the growing season.
- Reduced Costs: Preventing crop loss and cutting chemical use directly lowered overall operational expenses.
“Since updating our hygiene protocol, we have seen a clear reduction in Botrytis and less reliance on chemical sprays,” Záturecká notes. “Starting with clean facilities gives us healthier plants from day one.”
