K+S offers CO₂-reduced potassium and magnesium fertilizers
ShareShareShareShareShare
K+S sets standards for more climate-friendly agriculture: With the innovative C:LIGHT product line, the Company now also offers CO₂-reduced potash and magnesium fertilizers helping farmers and their partners to reduce the environmental footprint of food.
  • Innovative technology for a greener future
  • Pioneering work for CO₂-reduced fertilizers
  • Production of C:LIGHT products at several K+S sites

The launch of the C:LIGHT product line offers farmers and partner companies the opportunity to use potassium and magnesium fertilizers with a carbon footprint reduced by up to 90% compared to conventional K+S products. This new product line combines innovation with sustainability and is a central component of K+S’ climate strategy.

“With the launch of the C:LIGHT product line, we are doing pioneering work in the field of CO₂-reduced potash and magnesium fertilizers and underlining our role as a pioneer in environmentally friendly and sustainable mining. At the same time, we are helping our customers to achieve their sustainability goals,” said Dr. Burkhard Lohr, Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of K+S.

CO2-reduced Fertilizers in Strong Demand

Demand for CO₂-reduced fertilizers extends far beyond the German market. The first deliveries of Korn-KALI C:LIGHT have already been successfully completed. This confirms K+S’s leading position in the market for sustainable fertilizers. With the introduction of C:LIGHT, K+S underscores its commitment to sustainability and climate-friendly innovations. K+S plans to further expand the product portfolio under the C:LIGHT umbrella brand and, in the long term, to make a decisive contribution to the decarbonization of agriculture.

Innovation through Power-to-Heat

At the heart of the C:LIGHT product development is the so-called power-to-heat technology (PtH), with which K+S is taking decisive steps towards climate neutrality. The newly constructed PtH boilers at the Neuhof-Ellers, Zielitz, and Werra sites generate heat from renewable energy sources and, therefore, significantly reduce CO₂ emissions. As a result, the production of fertilizers will have a significantly lower impact on the environment.

C:LIGHT products from K+S can be produced with electricity from renewable energy sources. In particular, the steam required for the production process in the PtH plants is produced with electricity from renewable energy sources and not with natural gas as in the past. Wherever possible, renewable energy is also used to meet the remaining electricity needs of the production process. By accounting for the use of electricity from renewable sources, the product-related carbon footprint (PRF) of C:LIGHT products can be reduced by up to 90% compared to conventional K+S products.

Accounting allocation means that the energy, heat and steam consumed is allocated to the product in a spatial and temporal context. This means that the heat generated in the PtH boiler is allocated to the product within six months and only at the sites where the PtH boilers were also used in the respective production line. The CO₂ reductions refer to Scope 1 + 2 in accordance with the GHG Protocol, with 2020 as the base year. The calculation methodology has been verified against ISO 14040 and 14044. Electricity from renewable energy sources is generated in Germany and accounted for by purchasing and offsetting guarantees of origin from the German Guarantee of Origin Register (HKNR).
